Hamburg retirement home Matthäus: First infection on Christmas Day

The Alster canals are among Hamburg's best addresses, and magnificent villas with park-like gardens line the banks.
The Matthäus senior citizens' home is on the bend to the Rondeelteich.
Many paddlers come by here and marvel at the beautiful garden, which looks as if the old people were really happy there.
The entrance is on the street in the chic district of Winterhude, there on a Tuesday afternoon in February, home manager Rainer Gropp is standing in the door lock and trying to provide information about the Corona accident that befell his home.
He is wearing an FFP2 mask and a light yellow protective gown.
Photos of residents with devil squirrels and funny hats are stuck on a pin board, "A bit of carnival" is written above it.
The nursing staff is trying as best they can to bring normalcy back to the old people's home, which made headlines in December because of a corona outbreak: 94 of the 118 residents were infected, 18 died, and it was one of the most serious outbreaks in Hamburg.
The house was quarantined for more than a month.
