A 19-year-old collapsed in the custody of the police in Delmenhorst, Lower Saxony - and died a little later in the hospital.

The young man died on Saturday evening, as the police announced on Sunday.

A spokesman for the Oldenburg public prosecutor said that an autopsy had been ordered by the court at the request of the authority, results are not yet available.

According to the investigators, the 19-year-old was brought to the office on Friday evening after a check for possible drug use.

The police started an investigation into the cause of death.

Two officers wanted to control two men who, according to the police, were apparently taking drugs.

When the civilian investigators revealed themselves, one of the men is said to have fled, but was overtaken after a few meters.

Collapse in the cell

It is said to have come to an argument, the 19-year-old is said to have hit a police officer with his fist, among other things.

This is said to have used pepper spray.

The police said that the young man refused to be treated by the alarmed rescue workers.

After the inspection, according to the information, a standby judge ordered a blood sample at the request of the public prosecutor.

While the officers were waiting for a doctor, the 19-year-old was reportedly taken to a detention cell.

Before the doctor's arrival, police officers saw the prisoner collapse in the cell via video surveillance.

According to the police, the officers then provided first aid, the emergency services were alerted and took care of the young man.

For reasons of neutrality, the Oldenburg-Stadt / Ammerland police station took over the investigation from the police in Delmenhorst.
