Brazil: sentences canceled, Lula returns eligible

A Brazilian Supreme Court judge overturned all the sentences imposed on former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva by the pool of Curitiba magistrates holding the Lava Jato investigation, the Brazilian Tangentopoli. (HANDLE)


(ANSA) - SAN PAOLO, 08 MAR - A judge of the Supremabrasilian Court has overturned all the sentences inflicted on former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva by the pool of magistrates of Curitiba, holders of the Lava Jato investigation, the Tangentopolibrasiliana.

Lula then returns eligible for the presidential elections of 2022.


    "With the decision, all the sentences issued by the 13 / a federal section of Curitiba have been declared void and the documents will be transmitted to the federal district court", syllable in a note from the Supreme Court.


    The decision was made by Chief Justice Edson Fachin and will not have to be ratified in plenary session.

The Curitiba Federal Prosecutor's Office is likely to appeal.


    Lula, 75, has always declared himself innocent and victim of political persecution by the 'LavaJato' investigation team and former judge Sergio Moro who, after having sentenced the former worker-president, became Minister of Justice of the government of Jair Bolsonaro.


    On February 9, the Supreme Court granted Lula's defense access to the messages between the prosecutors of Curitiba and Moro.

The messages emerged in 2019 during the Spoofing operation, the investigation into the hacking of the telegram messaging accounts of former judge Moro, prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol and other members of the prosecutor's office investigating Lula.
