When shopping in the branches of Lidl and Kaufland, there is an innovation that many customers will not notice.

But it should definitely have an impact.

Heilbronn receipts play a major role in paper consumption.

After all, millions of purchases are made every day at German retail companies alone - and receipts will always be printed on paper in 2021.

That is changing, however, and with Lidl and Kaufland, two of the country's largest supermarket chains have now announced that they will be using more environmentally friendly eco-vouchers in the future.

"The innovative, blue thermal paper on the new receipt is FSC-certified and comes from responsible forest management," Kaufland said in a press release.

Both Lidl and Kaufland belong to the empire of the Schwarz Group from Neckarsulm near Heilbronn, whose owners are among the richest people in Germany and in the world.

Lidl and Kaufland: receipts made from thermal paper also have advantages for customers

The companies of the traditional German trading group are thus making a contribution to greater sustainability - a project that can often be implemented through many small steps rather than one drastic measure.

However, the use of thermal paper should not only have positive consequences for the general public and the reputation of the two successful retail chains - according to the companies, the change will also bring advantages for customers:

On the one hand, the eco-receipts last longer because they are not only water-resistant, but also oil-resistant.

This also plays a role when using deposit tokens, after all, consumers keep these notes in their wallets for a long time, where the characters then fade over time.

However, at the request of

Lidl and Kaufland are switching to eco-vouchers - other retail chains were faster

The new receipts are made of thermal paper and are designed entirely without chemical color developers such as phenols, and they are more resistant to fading, for example from sunlight.

Another advantage arises from the fact that the material is not harmful to health.

This is potentially possible with the previously common variants if there is contact with food (which is not washed off before consumption).

Lidl and Kaufland are not pioneers when it comes to Ökobon: Last year, for example, rivals Edeka and Netto switched their system to more environmentally friendly shopping lists.

In addition to the receipts, the Schwarz Group will now also adjust the receipt rolls.

The group expects this step to save around 30 tons of plastic per year as part of its large-scale environmental strategy.
