(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 08 - Net increase in the average cost for the repatriation of migrants found in an irregular position in Italy: it goes from 1,398 to 1,905 euros.

The amount was fixed by a decree of the Chief of Police published today in the Official Journal.

The sanction inflicted on employers in the event of violation of the prohibition of illegal employment is commensurate with the cost of repatriation - updated every year.

In the complex calculation to determine the figure, the total costs incurred annually for the repatriation of foreigners and the number of repatriations actually carried out are taken into account. The average figure thus obtained is then increased by 30% in order to also consider the incidence of the costs relating to the accompanying and escort services of foreigners to be sent back to the homeland. For 2021, the figure of 1,905 euros is thus obtained, with an increase attributable to the Covid pandemic which has made travel more expensive.

So far this year there have been about 600 repatriations carried out at term; in 2020 there were 3,585, a number halved due to the blockade caused by the Coronavirus. (HANDLE).
