The hype in the run-up had been considerable.

Now the US broadcaster CBS has broadcast moderator Oprah Winfrey's conversation with Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan.

Indeed, the couple revealed some notable details from their time in the British royal family - and about their decision to give up royal duties.

Meghan sees herself as a victim of "character assassination".

An incident with her sister-in-law Kate was completely misrepresented and everyone in the royal family knew this.

For her this was "the beginning of a true character assassination" and a "turning point" in her relationship with the royal family.

The Duchess of Sussex was referring to an incident prior to her wedding to Harry in May 2018 that allegedly made her sister-in-law cry and that was widely reported in the tabloids.

"The opposite was true," Meghan said in the interview.

"Everyone in the institution knew that." In truth, Kate was "upset about something," but then saw it and apologized for it.

Meghan, whose mother is African American, also said that the British royal family was worried about the color of his skin before the birth of their first son Archie.

During her pregnancy, she had to have conversations about how dark his skin would be.

That's why, as Harry's conversations with the "family" showed, they didn't want to give him the title of prince.

The former actress did not reveal who specifically raised these racist concerns.

No direct personal attacks on the rest of the royals

Life in the orbit of the palace was so stressful that Meghan claims to have had suicidal thoughts.

"I just didn't want to be alive anymore," she said on CBS.

At that time, she was also afraid of being alone because she could have harmed herself.

She turned to her husband, Prince Harry, and the palace to help her.

However, no offer of help had come from the palace.

Contrary to speculation in the British press, Meghan refrained from personal attacks against the royal family.

The Queen always treated her well, said the Duchess.

Her sister-in-law Kate is also a "good person."

Harry, in turn, said he was worried that history might repeat itself.

This should have been meant as an allusion to his mother, Princess Diana.

Even this had not felt comfortable in the royal family - and was tackled hard by the British tabloids.

She died in a car accident in 1997 while fleeing paparazzi.

Frustrated with his own father's behavior

The constant barrages of the palace would have made him desperate, no one could help the couple despite their difficulties within the royal family, Harry continued.

That was the point at which the couple decided to leave the UK.

He did not take his own grandmother, King Elizabeth, by surprise.

His respect for the monarch is too great for that anyway.

Father Charles, however, stopped taking Harry's phone calls.

This disappointed him very much.

In addition, he no longer receives any financial support from the family.

The 39-year-old and Harry (36) had given up their royal duties around a year ago and moved to Meghan's home USA with their son Archie, who will be two years old in May.

Meanwhile, the couple is expecting a second child - it will be a girl, as the two reported in the interview.

"Having a boy and a girl, what more could you want?" Said Harry.

The two wanted to leave it with two children, they said.

They were expecting the baby in the summer.
