MATERA - The Materana Murgia Park Authority will recover an ancient "roof" rural cistern to be used for civil protection functions, to allow firefighters and volunteers to collect water for extinguishing forest fires.

The work, built in the last century, is located in the '' Bosco del Comune '', and was once used for drawing water and for watering herds and flocks of animals.

The works, lasting 90 days and costing about 70 thousand euros, involve the removal of the shrubs that have compromised the structure, the functional recovery of the cistern with a restoration of the impermeability of the walls.

The cleaning of the upper part will also be carried out, the integration of some missing parts and the four columns in tuff will be built to restore their original historical value.

The Authority will also install a continuous monitoring system of the "Bosco del Comune", through cameras "easily camouflaged in the area adjacent to the cistern".

"The reuse of the Cisterna del Comune, also known as the Cisterna di Tempa Rossa - said the president of the Park, Michele Lamacchia - is important, as it will allow the recovery of an ancient artifact of extraordinary historical-pastoral value, with the endowment of a water resource within the Park's fire prevention network and for watering the fauna of the rock habitat ''.
