(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 09 - "Nomadland" and "Rocks" with 7nominations each.

Anthony Hopkins and FrancesMcDormand are among the most important names in the shortlist of candidates for the Bafta film awards, the English 'Oscars', announced today 9 March.

The awards ceremony is expected on 11 April without an audience.


   Hollywood legend Hopkins was nominated for her portrayal in "The Father," in which she plays a man who crawls into dementia.

Fargo actress Frances McDormand was selected for her role in the acclaimed independent road movie "Nomadland," which she also produced, in which she plays a nomadic woman traveling to the American West.

Chinese director of the film, Chloe Zhao is one of four women in the shortlist of six candidates for the best directorial award.


   The others are Shannon Murphy for "Babyteeth", an Australian coming-of-age drama, Bosnian Jasmila Zbanic for the film "Quo Vadis, Aida?"

and Britain's Sarah Gavron for "Rocks".


   "Rocks" stars Bukky Bakray as a black London teenager who is left to fend for herself after being abandoned by her mother.

Bakray will face McDormand in the category of Best Actresses.


   The British Academy of Film and Television Arts was criticized for lack of diversity: no female director nominated last year.

As a result, it introduced changes to the membership and membership processes and expanded the domestic film category to 10nominations.

It also expanded the nomination for Best Director, Actor and Actress from five to six for this year's awards, which have been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
