Crates, crates, boxes ... in Vendôme, market traders must clear their way

In Vendôme (Loir-et-Cher), market traders must now leave with their crates. Which they don't really like.

Garbage cans are overflowing in the markets of Vendôme (Loir-et-Cher).

The town hall and the Valdem waste intercommunal union have just changed the rules: now traders must keep their packaging, namely crates, crates and other boxes.

At the end of the market, they can only leave perishable food in the bins, under penalty of a fine.

Not really to the taste of traders, who denounce pell-mell the lack of consultation and a brutal and too general measure.

"They could have left us sorting bins, as in Montoire, we are able to distinguish ...", annoys a seller of fruit and vegetables, forced to repack his large boxes of empty bananas at the exit of the Sunday market.

100 euros per ton

Non-sedentary traders are not the only ones involved.

“It is true that residents took advantage of the dumpsters to clean their homes.

Some dumpsters were sometimes full before the market started, ”admits Thierry Boulay, president of this union of 53 municipalities, deputy mayor in the neighboring town of Thoré-la-Rochette.

However, local elected officials do not seem ready to reverse this decision, which goes in the direction of waste reduction.

“Since the first containment, the volume of garbage collected has increased by 800 tonnes in our territory.

We send all this to the Blois incinerator, which takes 100 euros per tonne.

It is an additional cost that we had not foreseen, justifies Thierry Boulay, who specifies that the deposits of packaging at the waste reception center remain free for the traders of the Vendôme markets.
