Some symbols of the feminist movement in the Madrid area were vandalized on the day of Women's Day.
Yesterday, a large mural depicting women considered emblems of the feminist struggle — located on the outer wall of the sports center in Concepción, a popular neighborhood in the Spanish capital — appeared covered in black paint and scribbles.
Several politicians, activists and citizens have reported the incident on social networks.
The National Police investigates to identify those responsible.
A group of inhabitants of the area - who had already decisively opposed in January a motion presented by the far-right party Vox and also approved by other center-right formations to eliminate it - has worked to cover the parts of the mural damaged with portraits prints of the women depicted in this urban painting.
Among them, activists such as the Guatemalan indigenous Rigoberta Menchú or the African American Rosa Parks are represented.
The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has promised that the mural will be restored.
On the night between Saturday and Sunday, a mural with feminist portraits located in Alcalá de Henares, a city about forty kilometers from Madrid, was also subjected to vandalism.
A similar fate is that of a mural woven in homage to feminism that was located in Colmenarejo, a village in the area.
