Sophia Loren will be honored by the new Academy Museum

(ANSA) - NEW YORK, MARCH 09 - 60 years after her role in the Ciociara, which won her an Oscar for best actress in a foreign film, and 30 years after her career Oscar, Sophia Loren adds a new recognition to the many accumulated in her long experience in world of cinema.

On 25 September the Italian actress will receive the first "Visionary Award" of the new Academy Museum: an honor reserved for "an artist or scholar whose work has made progress in the art of cinema".

The announcement from Los Angeles comes as the interpretation of the character of Madame Rosa in "La Vita Davanti a Se" by her son Edoardo Ponti is among those cited in view of the 2021 Oscar nominations that will be announced on Monday 15 March.

The "Visionary Award" adds to a long list of awards accrued by the 86-year-old Sophia and which include among other things - and besides the two Academy Awards - six Golden Globes, a Golden Lion and a Coppa Volpi in Venice, and then awards to Cannes, Berlin, London, ten David di Donatello.

In 1991, the American FilmInstitute included Loren in the list of the 25 greatest stars of all time.


    With the opening several times postponed due to the pandemic, the Academy museum is now expected to open to the public on September 30th.

The gala in which Sophia will be the guest of honor is scheduled five days before, as part of a series of celebrations in honor of the cutting of the ribbon.

The building designed by Renzo Piano is located in the "Miracle Mile" district and will open its doors with an inaugural exhibition dedicated to the great of cinema Hayao Miyazaki organized in collaboration with Studio Ghibli, of which the Japanese filmmaker Oscar won in 2003 for "Spirited Away" he was the founder together with his colleague and mentor Isao Takahata.
