Conflicts between parents exacerbated by forced coexistence, destruction of domestic routine, economic insecurity: the pandemic constitutes a very heavy burden for children and adolescents.

Several studies conducted around the world are in fact beginning to document the increase in cases of child abuse that decline in various ways, not only with forms of physical abuse and assisted violence, but also with extreme neglect in physical care and psychological needs.

This is one of the themes at the center of the Menarini project to create a network of anti-abuse 'sentinel' pediatricians, which is taking place for the fifth year.

In fact, the new digital courses are restarting, organized with the Italian Society of Pediatrics (Sio) and the Italian Federation of Pediatric Doctors (Fimp), to help specialists recognize and intercept any abuses even in forms other than "traditional" ones, but always more widespread and triggered by the pandemic.

Eighteenth-century pediatricians involved.

At risk for experts are above all children in disadvantaged contexts, "but no one is immune: in fact, a survey in the Covid era of the most important charity for children in the United Kingdom, shows that when stress and burnout increase, the risk of child abuse minors rears up. Starting from March 2020, many families have found themselves oppressed by economic and job uncertainty, overloaded with responsibilities from teaching to childcare 24 hours a day, distance from grandparents. Distancing from protective adults such as teachers, and less access in the emergency room, they did the rest ".

"There are many new ways - highlights Pietro Ferrara, SIP referent for abuse and mistreatment - in which the abuse in the Covid era probably manifested itself, starting with the violence witnessed certainly on the increase. Abuse due to neglect has also increased, with children left to fend for themselves, deprived of basic basic physical care, such as cleaning and nourishment, and emotional ".

Another issue not to be overlooked according to Luigi Nigri, vice president of Fimp, is "the refuge of young people in the 'network' which has exposed them even more to the risk of solicitation, online sexual abuse and cyberbullying".

For many minors, staying at home concise with the obligation "to live with violent people, without the possibility of asking for help - specify Lucia and Alberto Giovanni Aleotti, shareholders and members of the Board of Menarini - in this context, Menarini wanted to continue to support this project".
