Arkansas passes the most restrictive abortion law in the US and its Republican governor Asa Hutchinsos has already pledged to sign it.
The provision
prohibits termination of pregnancy "except to save the life of the pregnant mother in a medical emergency" and makes no exception in the case of rape, incest or fetal abnormality
.
Anyone who violates the law risks a
fine of up to $ 100,000 and a prison term of up to 10 years
.
"I will sign the law for his overwhelming legislative support and my sincere pro-life beliefs," commented Hutchinson.
The objective of the promoters of the restrictions is to arrive before the Supreme Court of the United States, in the hope that the conservative majority (made possible by the election of three judges by Donald Trump) can overturn the sentences issued so far regarding the interruption of the pregnancy.
Perhaps to the point of overturning the historic Roe vs.
Wade of 1973 who legalized abortion in America.
On February 18, the governor of South Carolina, Republican Henry McMaster, had signed another very restrictive law, which prohibits the termination of pregnancy after six weeks of gestation: it is the period in which the first heartbeat of the fetus is usually detected. but in which many women do not yet know they are pregnant.
Doctors who perform abortion beyond this period will face sentences of up to two years in prison.
The only exceptions covered are if the pregnancy was caused by sexual violence or incest, or if the mother is in danger of life.
