(ANSA) - BEIRUT, MARCH 11 - After ten years of armed violence in Syria, the impact on children and minors in general has been devastating.

This was revealed today by the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), according to which 90% of children are in need of humanitarian assistance, with an increase of 20% compared to last year.

According to Unicef data collected between 2011 and 2020, more than 12 thousand minors have been killed or injured, more than 5,700 children, some even as young as 7, have been recruited in the fighting, more than 1,300 health and school facilities, with their personnel, they were attacked by the warring parties.

In the press release released to the media, Unicef affirms that the war that lasted a decade in Syria had devastating consequences on children and infants.

"Inside Syria there are 6 million children in need of assistance, many of whom were born during the war and have known nothing but conflict, displacement and losses".

The UN agency recalls that "last year alone, the number of children reported with psychological distress has doubled, indicating the long-term consequences that the war continues to have on the mental health and well-being of children. Half of Syria's children do not go at school: one school out of three in Syria cannot be used because it has been damaged, destroyed, used as a refuge for displaced families or used for military purposes ".

Unicef does not forget the negative effects of the pandemic which "has further complicated the situation of Syria's children. The number of people in need of help has increased by 20% last year alone, 65% of families report that they cannot respond to the needs of base and about 80% of people in Syria live in poverty. "
