Obesity is one factor that promotes severe corona disease.
But even those who weigh very little are at risk, as a new study shows.
Anyone who is very overweight doubles their risk of dying from Covid-19 - according to the frightening result of a new study by the US
Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
.
This effect was particularly evident in people younger than 65 years of age.
But underweight patients also had an increased risk of dying from a coronavirus infection, according to the study results.
The researchers led by Lyudmyla Kompaniyets from the CDC had evaluated the data of 3.2 million US hospital patients in their study, with 148,494 of them being treated for Covid-19.
In the analysis, the researchers came to the conclusion that a certain weight group is particularly protected.
Those who had not weighed too much or too little had the best chances of survival:
According to the study, people on the verge of being overweight were best protected against dangerous corona courses.
As the Ärzteblatt quotes the CDC study, among other things, people with a BMI of 24.2 percent had to be hospitalized the least because of corona.
The risk of treatment in the intensive care unit was lowest with a BMI of 25.9 percent and the least likely to die of Covid-19, according to the study, were those with a BMI of 23.7.

According to a study, a BMI between 23.7 and 25.9 protects against severe Covid-19
According to the researchers, a BMI between 23.7 and 25.9 showed the best effects in terms of the course of Covid-19
.
Underweight and overweight, on the other hand, were associated with negative effects.
A BMI of 18.5 or less in the study participants under 65 was associated with a 41 percent higher risk of hospitalization.
However, the researchers added that underweight is rather rare in the USA: Only 1.8 percent of the Covid patients included in the study were underweight, which is why the study results would have to be checked again in a larger group.
In contrast, four fifths of the Covid sufferers examined were obese or overweight and therefore had a
BMI of 25 or higher
.
Above all, being very overweight and obese had a particularly dramatic effect on Covid courses.
According to the Ärzteblatt, those U-65-year-olds with a BMI of 45 or higher had a 101 percent higher risk of death compared to those of normal weight.
In general, the healthier a person, the better the body can fight off or fight off a coronavirus infection.
And people of normal weight usually lead a
healthier lifestyle than underweight and overweight people
, which includes a more balanced diet and more exercise - factors that strengthen the immune system and protect against severe corona courses.
