(ANSA) - GENEVA, MARCH 12 - Italy today condemned the "brutal repression" of peaceful protests in Burma (Myanmar) before the UN Human Rights Council.
In his speech in the framework of the Interactive Dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur for Myanmar Thomas Andrews, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva, reiterated Italy's "firm condemnation of the coup "and the demand to immediately end the state of emergency and release President Win Myint, State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi, civil society activists and all those who are unjustly detained"
Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado - a note from the Representation reports - also reiterated the condemnation of the "brutal repression of peaceful protests in the country", urging the military regime to stop the excessive use of lethal force against the population "and to guarantee" full respect for human rights and the rule of law ".
Finally, the Ambassador expressed the" solidarity of the Italians towards the people of Myanmar and those who peacefully seek to ensure that the country resumes its path towards democracy ". (ANSA) .
