(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, MAR 11 - Andrew Cuomo trembles: the state parliament, controlled by his own party, has launched an impeachment investigation against the powerful Democratic governor of New York.
After three hours of urgent meeting, the Justice Commission was given ample power to investigate the accusations against him: both those of sexual harassment and those of manipulation of the data of the elderly who died of Covid in the nursing homes.
The decision sets the stage for what could be the first impeachment attempt of a New York governor in over a century.
"The news of the accusations concerning the governor are sonographic", commented the speaker of the assembly, the dem Carl E.
Heastie, adding that the investigation will include the questioning of witnesses, the acquisition of documents and the evaluation of evidence.
The announcement comes on the same day that 59 state parliament Democrats - about 40 percent of party members in the House and Senate - signed a document calling for Cuomo's immediate resignation.
A few hours later the police of Albany, the capital, confirmed that they had received notification from the New York colleagues of one of the allegations of harassment that took place in the governor's residence and that could rise to the level of criminal offense.
So far, six women have come out of the closet to report harms or inappropriate behavior of the dem leader.
Five are former collaborators.
The governor apologized but denied episodes of harassment and refused to resign, explaining that he wanted to await the conclusion of the independent investigation launched by the New York prosecutor.
But now it could be his own party that prosecuted him.
