For years, an elite soldier from the Special Forces Command (KSK) hoarded weapons, explosives and ammunition in his garden in northern Saxony - but he doesn't have to go to jail for that.
The Leipzig Regional Court sentenced the 46-year-old to a two-year prison sentence for violating the War Weapons Control Act, the Weapons Act and the Explosives Act.
However, the court suspended the sentence.
The attorney general's office had asked for a prison sentence of two and a half years, the defense a suspended sentence.
The verdict is not yet legally binding.
Right-wing radical background not detectable
The sergeant major of the 2nd KSK Company had buried a dangerous arsenal in boxes, buckets and sacks in his garden in Collm, northern Saxony: two kilograms of professional explosives, several thousand pieces of rifle and pistol ammunition, an AK47 assault rifle, a crossbow, a smoke hand grenade and firearms and gun parts.
During the search of the house in May 2020, the investigators also discovered writings with right-wing extremist content.
Extensive investigations could not substantiate the suspicion of an extremist motive.
The 46-year-old said he needed the guns and ammunition for his training.
There were often equipment bottlenecks in the Bundeswehr.
He said he wanted to use the assault rifle for decoration.
