"We feel protected": the new life of those who have been (fully) vaccinated against Covid-19

More than 2 million French people have already received two doses of the vaccine, and are already starting to be less vigilant about compliance with certain gestures.

A grandmother who embraces her grandchildren, without any protection, after having been deprived of them for "a long time", as Gilbert Bécaud sings in the background music.

Before realizing that it is still ... just a dream, made while receiving an injection of the anti-Covid vaccine.

This scene is the backdrop for the government clip to encourage people to get vaccinated, posted on June 9 on social networks.

To find ourselves tomorrow, let's get vaccinated.

But it is still only a hope for the future, if we follow the recommendations of the government.

This continues to encourage people to "continue to respect barrier gestures even if we have been vaccinated", we hear in a sport regularly broadcast on the radio.

“We have hardly changed our habits and continue to be very careful,” says Paul, an ophthalmologist by training and doubly “stung” on January 10 and then on February 10.

Like him, more than two million inhabitants in France are now fully vaccinated, that is to say they have received two doses of vaccine (only the Janssen product, which will not be used before the month of April, requires only one injection).

More than 60% of them are at least 75 years old.

It is logical: to have already received two doses, it is most often necessary to have received the first in January (the time between the two is three weeks in nursing homes and four weeks for all the others).

However, the campaign was then only open to people aged at least 75 years, to those with a very serious illness, as well as to caregivers at least 50 years old or with comorbidities.

"I probably feel saved"

In fact, the maximum effectiveness of the Pfizer or Moderna RNA vaccines is expected approximately two weeks after the second injection.

Regarding Pfizer, it is estimated at 94 or even 97% against symptomatic forms and more than 90% against severe forms of Covid-19, according to two recent studies carried out in real conditions in Israel.

So, reinforced by these good figures, Alain relishes the moments he spends again with his family.

This 69-year-old worker in an association with the elderly and frail, was able to be vaccinated on January 11 and then on February 14.

“We can see friends, our children, our grandchildren without much fear, whereas for a long time at the start of the crisis we could only see each other through interposed screens,” he testifies, all smiles.

We went on vacation in February with two of my daughters and my five grandchildren, it's much more pleasant when you feel protected ”.

If he lives alone in his house in the depths of Cantal and does not take advantage of his family as often, François, 94, admits that he "receives more readily" acquaintances from the village or friends who have come to visit him.

A former country doctor, he wanted to be vaccinated as soon as possible.

“I was looking forward to it and today I probably feel saved,” he savored.

“I was not extremely anxious, especially in a department with very few cases of Covid.

But I knew that if I caught it, I had a very good chance of passing it, ”adds the retiree.

"I am vaccinated, let me take off my mask"

Feeling protected is one thing, not being able to pass the virus on to others is another.

It is still unknown whether vaccination also protects against contagiousness.

But several recent scientific studies, including two carried out there also in Israel, have gone in this direction.

"Very interesting studies tend to show that vaccination would protect against contagiousness," Olivier Véran himself said on Thursday, March 4.

“As I have heard everywhere that the vaccine was also effective against transmission, I no longer always put on the mask when I am with friends,” says Marie, a liberal doctor who has just celebrated her 64th birthday.

A few days ago, her mask around her face was confusing her as she tried on a new swimsuit in a boutique.

“I said to the saleswoman, I'm vaccinated, let me take it off.

She smiled and accepted, ”she says.

Despite all this, the Ministry of Health has yet to announce an easing of the rules.

Only nursing home residents will be able to benefit from more freedoms, especially for visits and outings.

“There is still no absolute scientific consensus on the transmission of the virus today, although there are strong suspicions.

And the current epidemic solution does not allow us to relax the attention, especially since there are still very few French people fully vaccinated ", we dismiss the ministry, while" hoping "to be able to change position" the As fast as possible ".

Towards a vaccination passport?

The United States does not have these cautions.

On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that vaccinated people are now allowed to meet indoors without wearing a mask with people who have been fully vaccinated or do not have risk factors for severe forms of disease.

A strategy that Paul considers completely coherent, to the point that he is already self-applying.

“We are seeing friends who have been vaccinated or even not vaccinated and by removing the masks, we have again offered it to some this weekend.

Before, we were much more vigilant, ”he testifies.

Beyond the wearing of the mask and barrier gestures, many questions arise for the future.

The “vaccine passport” comes back in the mouths of almost all of our witnesses.

As Alain recalls, "we still can't go to a restaurant or to the cinema or see friends at night and we find ourselves running around before 6 pm to go shopping, it's depressing".

"The recovery of the economy also involves the reopening of certain places," said Paul, who considers "scandalous" that more than half of caregivers have not yet been vaccinated.

Less clear-cut, Marie concludes: “We should have some sort of label showing that we have been vaccinated, but it is complicated to put in place.

And then, for the moment, I would feel a little uncomfortable giving the impression of taunting others.
