Just three hours flight from Italy there is a war, the one in Syria, which has lasted for ten years, has killed about half a million people and has devastated the cities and countryside of a Mediterranean country that will take decades to get up and will continue to be an incubator of radicalisms of all colors. Syria is a country physically torn inside, divided into areas of influence by foreign actors who for years have shared the energetic and territorial remains of a millenary land, the cradle of civilizations and crossroads between Asia, Africa and Europe, today inserted in a Middle East plagued by the worst economic and financial crisis since the beginning of the century, aggravated by the repercussions of the pandemic. The reconstruction of the infrastructure is also far away because there are no local and foreign investors. The recomposition of the community fabric is even more a mirage: ten million out of twenty Syrians have had to abandon their homes, fleeing abroad or remaining displaced in the rubble, exposed to bombing and violence, for ten naked winters in the face of freezing winters Middle Eastern. Those who have escaped will hardly return without prospects of having a home, a job, a future for their children. Those who have not managed to escape struggle to find resources to move forward. Due to the unprecedented currency crisis in neighboring Lebanon, US economic sanctions and prolonged armed conflict, the Syrian pound is now waste paper. In this desolation children are the excellent victims, those who have grown up in the shadow of armed violence for 10 years and who in 10 years will be the new adults in search of socio-economic perspectives and political rights. Millions of Syrian children have not known a school path worthy of the name. According to UNICEF, 90% of Syrian minors are in need of humanitarian assistance. From 2011 to 2020, more than 12,000 minors were killed or injured; more than 5,700 children, some as young as 7, were recruited in the fighting; more than 1,300 health and education facilities, and their staff, were attacked by the warring parties.
