Due to the health crisis, Panamanian students are forced to take their courses online. But some, like in the community

Leave no student behind.

This is what prompts Graciela Bouche to embark in a canoe every morning for a long and difficult crossing of the Chagres River.

Its destination: the indigenous Embara Ella Puru community, nestled in the heart of the lush vegetation of Panama's protected areas.

“The initiative to come and teach in this community was motivated by the connectivity problem they face and the fact that they don't receive academic content like other students.

It motivated me to come and meet them and give them a half-face lesson, ”explains the teacher, who also gives afternoon online lessons to other students.

With its schools closed for over a year, Panama is the country in the world where classes have been held remotely for the longest time.

Armed with a blackboard and a laptop, she shares her knowledge with the children of the community, to the great relief of parents, overwhelmed by the problems posed by virtual lessons.

“Graciela does it with love for the children and we really appreciate her and we are here to support the teacher,” says Evelyn Cabrera, secretary of the Embara Ella Puru indigenous community.

“My son is feeling good.

It's better, he says, because he's learning, she continues.

Because sometimes there is no signal on the phone here, or even sometimes there is no data or I don't have a SIM card for the child to connect, and it's hard to access websites.

Normally, children go to school in urban areas and are forced to take a boat, then take a 40-minute bus ride to their classes.

A situation that teacher Graciela Bouche would like to see disappear at the end of the epidemic.

“Once the pandemic and this whole global crisis is over, it would be good to improve transportation so that they can go back to school.

They should benefit from all their learning hours, ”she concludes.
