The former president of Bolivia Jeanine Anez was arrested last night in an operation on the outskirts of the city of Trinidad, capital of the department of Beni.
The information was confirmed by the Minister of the Interior, Carlos del Castillo, who communicated the news through his personal account on Twitter.
Anez is accused of terrorism, sedition and conspiracy in the context of the alleged "coup d'etat" trial against former president Evo Morales in 2019. "I inform the Bolivian people that Ms. Jeanine Añez has already been arrested and is currently in the hands of the police, "wrote Del Castillo.
After his arrest, Anez also tweeted denouncing a persecution of the Luis Arce government.
"I denounce before Bolivia and the world that the Mas government had me arrested in an act of abuse and political persecution. It accuses me of having participated in a coup that never took place. My prayers for Bolivia and for all Bolivians ", reads the tweet.
Yesterday, the police went to Anez's residence in Trinidad, but not finding her at home, they proceeded to investigate the city.
According to the news site El Deber, the operation was led by the government minister himself, Carlos del Castillo, and by the commander general of the police, colonel, Jhonny Aguilera.
The Attorney General of Bolivia yesterday signed a series of arrest orders against former President Añez, various former ministers and former senior officers of the Armed Forces, as part of the trial for the alleged "coup" against Morales .
Carrying out numerous arrest orders, on Friday the Bolivian police first arrested former admiral Flavio Arce and later former energy minister, Rodrigo Guzman, and former colleague of justice, Alvaro Coimbra.
Some other defendants - such as former ministers Arturo Murillo and Luis Fernando Lopez and former general Orellana - have fled abroad and will have to be located and possibly requested for extradition.
