The Russian vaccine against the coronavirus guarantees
two years of immunity
, the creators of Sputnik V affirmed this Sunday. In addition, they assured that it presents the
same effectiveness for all
age groups.
"The duration of the immunological effects of this vaccine
will be very long
. We hope it will be
two years or more
," said Alexander Gintsburg, director of
the Gamaleya Institute
, the entity behind the development of the Russian product.
While he trusted that the
Sputnik Light
(which only requires one dose) is in the final stages of evaluation, he said that those who receive this new version will have a
shorter duration of
immunity
.
He also referred to the doubts that had initially circulated about the effects of the vaccine in older adults.
He explained that those unknowns arose because the immune system of the elderly "no longer responds well."
However, he stressed that the effectiveness is the same for all ages: "People over 60, 70 and 80 years
respond perfectly to this drug

Gintsburg said that Sputnik V is the
best option in the market
for vaccines against the coronavirus: "Among the 4-6 preparations in the world (...), from what we see, Sputnik V occupies, due to its qualities ,
the first place
".
Sputnik V was the first vaccine to arrive in Argentina, at the end of December.
In principle, the national government announced the landing of 20 million doses in the first months of 2021. However, the Russian authorities accused logistical problems and delayed delivery.
The director of the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology Gamaleya - the full name of the Moscow institute - made these statements to Russian journalist Vladimir Soloviev, who interviewed him on his YouTube channel, according to the site Russia Today.
So far, the country has received 2,470,540 doses of this vaccine (1,660,540 correspond to the first component and 810,000 to the second).
Specialists estimate that the period between the first application and the second can be
between 21 and 75 days
.
In any case, a study by Conicet opens the possibility that the second application is not necessary in those people who suffered from Covid-19.
In this regard, Gintsburg remarked this Sunday that those people who have already contracted the virus, but have few antibodies,
should be vaccinated in the same way
as those who were never infected.
The creators of Sputnik V said that the Russian vaccine is equally effective at all ages, including older adults.

Sputnik V in cancer patients
"Research on cancer patients has already started," Gintsburg told Russian public television.
The scientist stressed that "at this time
there is no oncological disease
that could be
contraindicated
against this vaccine."
Alezander Guintsburg, director of the Russian institute Gamaleya, interviewed via YouTube.
"The only
exception
are those cases when the patient is
under chemotherapy
and takes drugs that prevent the multiplication of cells," he said.
In such cases, he said, "the vaccine does nothing bad, but at the same time
the
(desired)
effect
of the vaccination
is not achieved
."
Gintsburg also
advised against
the use of Sputnik V for people with
severe allergic
complications
.
