(ANSA) - YANGON, MAR 15 - The Burmese military junta has declared martial law in two municipalities of its largest city Yangon, while at least 18 protesters were killed in the country in one of the days with the most victims since Burma returned to military rule .
The junta "gives administrative and judicial martial law power to the Yangon regional commander to ensure security, maintain the rule of law and peace of mind more effectively," a state announcer said on television.
The UN emissary for Burma, Christine SchranerBurgener, denounces the "bloodbath" underway in the country and asks the "international community, and especially the actors of the region, to unite in solidarity with the Burmese population and its democratic aspirations".
