After the demonstration in Dresden on Saturday, which got partly out of control, calls for consequences and reappraisal are increasing.

"Many Corona deniers, so-called lateral thinkers and organized right-wing extremists came to Dresden, although the ban on the reported meetings was confirmed by the Higher Administrative Court," criticized the domestic political spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group in the Saxon state parliament, Albrecht Pallas.

Despite the prohibition of a "lateral thinking" demonstration, opponents of the corona measures had gathered in the city on Saturday.

According to the police operations record, more than 1,000 people met at the congress center near the state parliament alone - many without a mask and a minimum distance.

Several hundred demonstrators then marched towards the Ostragehege.

Twelve officers were injured, according to the police, initially four people were injured.

A video by the freelance reporter Julius Geiler is said to show the scenes of the violence on Saturday:

A journalist is also said to have been attacked on the sidelines of the demonstration.

The chairman of the German Association of Journalists (DJV), Frank Überall, commented on this in a press release: "I say to the corona deniers and self-appointed lateral thinkers: We will continue to provide comprehensive and critical information whether you like it or not."

Opposition in the Saxon state parliament calls for consequences

"Again, the ranks of the lateral thinkers brutally attacked police officers and journalists," said SPD politician Pallas.

The police were not able to enforce the ban on the gatherings.

The left parliamentary group had announced that it would request a special meeting of the interior committee on Monday.

"I want to know why the ban on the anti-infection protection assembly was not enforced," said left-wing politician Kerstin Köditz.

She criticized Saxony's Minister of the Interior, Roland Wöller (CDU) as a “breakdown minister of the interior” and demanded consequences after the latest events.

The SPD domestic politician Pallas supports the left's demand for a special meeting of the interior committee.

"The events have to be dealt with politically and in parliament." One must question whether the tactics of the assembly authorities and the police were correct, whether the approach was appropriate and whether action should have been taken earlier.

A total of around 1,800 officials were deployed in Dresden.

The Greens in the state parliament also spoke out in favor of a special meeting of the interior committee on Sunday.

From the mistakes of the past, the correct conclusions for the deployment concepts for “lateral thinking” demos were obviously not drawn, criticized the member of parliament Valentin Lippmann: “Once again, the fatal picture has emerged that the state has in some cases backed away from violent democracy enemies.”
