Corona can be fatal - among other things, if the disease leads to thrombosis.

German researchers have now found a very likely explanation.

In recent months, doctors have had to fight for the lives of corona patients again and again.

And even a year after the onset of the pandemic, doctors are often only able to treat the symptoms *.

To date, there has been no resounding success with regard to drugs against the virus itself.

If a corona infection is severe or even fatal, in many cases it was associated with severe disorders of the coagulation system with complications such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism

, as the German Heart Foundation informs.

“Doctors suspect the reason for the frequent formation of thrombosis in Covid-19 patients is an excessive coagulability of the blood, hypercoagulation, which they attribute to an inflammatory reaction in the course of Covid-19 disease.

The vascular occlusions can also lead to complications such as heart attacks and strokes, ”

it said.

Blood analyzes of intensive care patients with severe Covid-19 had shown that blood clots formed more quickly and coagulation factors were activated more strongly than in other inpatients, the German Heart Foundation cites the findings of the University Clinic Tübingen.

As part of a research project funded by the Heart Foundation, researchers from Tübingen investigated why Corona can have an extremely negative effect on the coagulation system and, in the worst case, cut the oxygen supply to the heart, brain or kidneys.

Thrombosis due to Corona: "The immune system is probably run over by this strong viral load"

“Our work shows that there is at least one indirect way to activate the platelets by the Sars-CoV-2 virus.

This indirect path goes through the antibodies, ”says Professor Tamam Bakchoul, Medical Director at the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Transfusion Medicine at the University Hospital Tübingen.

In contrast to the normally inpatient corona patients, it was noticeable in ventilated Covid intensive care patients that they were more prone to thromboembolic events, which means that they are more prone to the formation of blood clots in vessels, according to a video by the German Heart Foundation.

Scientists from Tübingen have now been able to demonstrate for the first time what role antibodies play in this

.

The antibodies bind to the blood platelets and thus trigger the coagulation-promoting state, it goes on to say.

“The immune system is likely to be run over by this heavy viral load.

This encroachment on the immune system means that the production of these defensive substances, i.e. the antibodies, can no longer be controlled, ”says Bakchoul.

As a result, the immune system no longer recognizes its own cells and proteins.

Heart and other high-risk patients in particular have an increased risk of thrombosis and could therefore be more affected by the activation of blood clotting in the event of a corona infection, warns the German Heart Foundation.

“In the meantime, we in the community of coagulation experts are of the opinion

that even with an inpatient stay, i.e. from the moment when the patients are less mobile than others, it is normal that the patients receive what is known as thrombosis prophylaxis.

These are the abdominal syringes that are also used after surgical interventions, ”says coagulation expert Professor Tamam Bakchoul.

The scientists also want to develop new drugs that prevent the formation of blood clots in Covid-19, according to the video of the heart foundation.
