Google is bringing to Maps the ability for users to add information on missing streets, photos of places and opening hours of shops.
The company defines one of the new features as "drawing", similar to using the line tool in Microsoft Paint.
This will allow people to update the names of streets and clubs to make sure they match the physical addresses exactly.
Another feature is the option to add photos, to share small details about a place and enrich it with images that describe the features already present through text and any links.
With the same function it is possible to insert or suggest changes to the opening hours of shops and public areas.
Google will review contributions before making them public to make sure they are accurate.
In addition, it will warn in case of critical corrections, such as changing a bike path to the street.
"With all the changes our world has gone through in the past year, people are increasingly relying on digital tools to know if a nearby restaurant or grocery store is open or not," writes Google on the official blog to announce the Announcements.
"To make sure the map reflects the real world, we decided to allow anyone with an account to contribute their local knowledge to its improvement."
The update is currently available in the US and will arrive in more than 80 countries in the coming months, both on the desktop version of Google Maps and on Android.
