Our 2021 list of high schools that work miracles

2021-03-16T23:19:27.816Z

Our ranking, obtained from data published this Wednesday by the ministry, highlights the establishments that draw students ve

“The high school students who drop out, we do not let them go.

It's a commando operation ... smoothly!

»Word of happy principal.

Marlène Borel heads the Robert-Weinum high school, on the island of Saint-Martin, in the academy of Guadeloupe.

Its anti-failure philosophy pays off: the establishment occupies first place in the new list of high schools in the “Parisien” - “Today in France”.

This ranking rewards the high schools that make their students progress the most

Nine of the first fifteen places are occupied by establishments of Seine-Saint-Denis, installed in working-class districts, too little often pointed out for the success of their young people, where having his bac is not obvious.

"These data mean one thing: there is no fatality", philosopher Aïcha Amghar, principal of Germaine-Tillion, at Le Bourget (Seine-Saint-Denis), ranked second.

Here, the context wanted 40% of students to have a mention in 2020, they were 69% to get one!

"Here, the teachers don't let us down"

Same story at Robert-Weinum high school, this year's champion - already crowned in 2017 - which educates 915 teenagers.

"With us, the overwhelming majority of young people come from disadvantaged backgrounds: 42% of students have unemployed parents, 35% are children of craftsmen and employees", figures Marlène Borel, of which 69% of baccalaureate graduates have a mention ... while the Rue de Grenelle only counted on 35%.

“Here, the teachers don't let us down.

If they feel that there is a weakness, they are on our backs, but in the positive sense of the term, ”explains Maloé, 17, a final year student at Robert-Weinum.

"They leave no one behind, they do specific exercises with the less good among us," adds Briana, 16, in second.

“If we are bad when we arrive here, we come out much better,” concludes Maloé.

The teenager summarizes here the interest of classifying the establishments according to what they bring to their flock, a fortiori in this particular year, Covid-19 obliges.

The gross pass rate for the bac is not the best indicator

With the passage to the continuous control of the baccalaureate in March, the success rate for the 2020 vintage reached 95.7%, almost 8 points more than the previous year.

699 high schools show 100% success, or 30.14% of establishments.

For comparison, this figure was around 9% in 2019 and 2018!

In the same vein, 11 high schools had 100% mentions (including 6 in Paris, all private), whereas they were only three the previous year.

Classifying high schools solely in terms of gross success rates would not have meant much, as Nathalie Mons, president of the National Council for the Evaluation of the School System (Cnesco) already pointed out during our first ranking: “The important is to know if a high school keeps its students between the second and the bac, or if it eliminates the weakest along the way ”.

A compass to find the right high school

This is confirmed by Fabienne Rosenwald, director of studies and foresight (Depp) at the Ministry of Education.

“It is obviously a special year in view of the epidemic.

The success rate has increased sharply, but the expected rates (

Editor's note: what the statistical services of National Education can expect from a high school according to different academic and social criteria

) also, she recalls.

However, knowing that it is the difference between these two rates that gives the added value of a high school, the comparison remains viable!

We can always compare the behavior of a high school compared to those that resemble it, and have a scientific indicator on their contribution to access to the bac.

These data are therefore a compass for parents looking for an establishment, beyond the criteria of geographical proximity and the number of courses offered.

“For families, this makes it possible to find an effective school against dropping out of school,” concludes Fabienne Rosenwald.

Our method

The Parisien - Today in France ranking is based on indicators provided by the National Education, the “Ival”, published each year.

It highlights the ability of high schools to advance their students, including and especially in areas and territories where academic success is not a given.

To achieve this, we calculate the "added value" of high schools, that is to say the difference between the results observed and the performance that the statistical services of National Education expect of them, with regard to the educational profile and social aspects of their students (patent success rate, baccalaureate courses, number of scholarship holders, etc.).

This added value is scrutinized in three areas: the pass rate in the bac, the rate of mentions and the support rate, i.e. the percentage of students who stay in the establishment of the second. at the baccalaureate. To decide which high schools are tied, we have chosen as the second criterion the gross success rate in the exam and in the third the rate of mentions. For reasons of statistical soundness, only high schools presenting at least 100 candidates for the bac appear in our national ranking.
