The past year has been shaky and has changed the lives of a lot of people for the worse.

A new and comprehensive global report has tried to examine how much it has harmed the mental health of people around the world, and the results - worrying, but not very surprising.

The first annual report of The mental health million project measures and monitors the mental well-being of the global population in order to understand the causes of mental health decline, inform and guide effective policies and interventions in the future.

The report used data collected from 49,000 English-speaking people from eight countries: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Singapore.

Around 2,000 people in each country were surveyed in 2019 and the rest in 2020.

While the samples do not fully represent each and every country, the analysis provides some important insights into the state of mental health around the world.

The report uses data from Quotient Health Mental (MHQ), an anonymous online self-assessment tool that presents a score on a scale of 100 to 200, and reveals insights into people's cognitive abilities, emotional regulation and outlook, self-perception, the nature of their relationships with others. And the connection between mind and body.

The report found that the overall mental well-being score for 2020 was 66, compared to 90 in 2019.

The decline in mental health was more pronounced among younger people, women and people with a non-binary gender identity (not identifying as male or female), and showed how mental well-being is closely related to life circumstances, and therefore cannot be assumed to be the same between different groups.

In addition, it was found that the percentage of participants with a clinical risk level increased from 14 percent in 2019 to 26 percent in 2020.

Women were among the main sufferers.

The situation was serious among young people in general.

People aged 18 to 24 scored 86 points less on the MHQ scale, a 27 percent decrease compared to adults aged 65+, with mental well-being declining with each younger generation.

44 percent of the 18-24 age group reported being at a clinical risk level.

The report shows that young people had to deal with damaged self-worth, sadness and distress during the Corona period.

The differences are also noticeable in the gender spectrum.

Mental well-being was statistically higher in men than in women in all countries.

The gender gap in mental health has also widened with age, with young women struggling more than young men.

At the same time, both groups were in better shape than people with complex gender identities, who were over 50 percent at clinical risk, and reported more suicidal thoughts and intentions compared to other groups.
