Have you ever noticed green-bluish discolouration on the tap?

This could be the so-called verdigris.

Here's how to get rid of him.

When blue-green discolorations suddenly appear on the drain or on the aerators, many do not know what this is about at first.

Often, however, the so-called verdigris is behind it - but what exactly is it and how do you get rid of it?

What is verdigris?

The German Copper Institute defines verdigris - also copper acetate - as

the copper salt of acetic acid

.

This means that it only occurs when vinegar is associated with copper and is water-soluble.

The verdigris on the faucets has nothing to do with the water quality, but with the fact that many

water pipes in German households are made of copper

.

How do I remove verdigris from faucets & Co.?

Guidebooks often recommend

removing

the verdigris easily

with vinegar

.

And indeed, after cleaning, hardly anything can be seen of the copper acetate - but it is only created through the combination of copper and vinegar.

This is why

verdigris comes back relatively quickly and even worse after cleaning

You can

try

ammonia and salt

instead

.

To do this, put a tablespoon full of salt in a cup of ammonia and scrub the affected areas made of copper or brass with it.

Wear gloves, as ammonia is irritating to the skin.

After at least an hour of exposure, you can rinse off the agent again with water and clean the surfaces.

In addition to these methods, there is another one: Mix

pure alcohol or denatured spirit with two tablespoons of flour and a pinch of salt

to form a paste.

Spread this on the faucet or other affected areas and give it a few hours to take effect.

You should also wear gloves for safety's sake.
