From March 15th there will be a nationwide innovation in online shopping.

Many customers now have to contact their bank first.

Berlin - Since March 15, 2021, a new regulation for online shopping has been in effect across Germany.

From now on, shopping platforms such as Amazon, Ebay and Co. have to secure payment transactions over 30 euros by credit card twice.

This security process is also called "two-factor authentication".

This means that two of the three factors now have to be specified for payment transactions over 30 euros: Factor 1: possession of a credit card, for example, factor 2: knowledge of a password, for example, or factor 3: inherence, e.g. a face scan (digital Face recognition) or a fingerprint.

However, this new regulation does not only apply to online shopping.

As the European Consumer Center Germany announced, the provision also applies to Internet transfers and online payment services such as PayPal.

But even if there is something in the online shopping cart that costs less than 30 euros, there is something to consider in connection with the new regulation.

Because payments under 30 euros, i.e. for which double ID is not yet required, will only be possible a maximum of five times in a row in future.

In other words: until an amount of 150 euros is reached.

The new feature for online shoppers applies to amounts over 30 euros - including transfers via PayPal

Online customers must now complete the payment process on the Internet via SMS-TAN or another form of identity confirmation, for example.

If you have a credit card for which the TAN function has not yet been activated, you should contact your bank.

The aim of the new regulations is to generate more security in payment transactions when shopping online and thus to make a contribution to consumer protection.

New rules for online shopping should ensure more security

In addition to consumer protection, the new provisions also offer other advantages for online shoppers.

For common cashless payment methods, there are no possible additional fees from online retailers.

In the case of unauthorized withdrawals, banks must transfer the corresponding amount back within 24 hours of being informed.

If the credit card was charged by a third party after it was lost, you are only liable up to 50 euros.

Before the innovation, the cardholder was liable up to 150 euros.

This regulation only applies if gross negligence and intent are excluded.

In addition, in the case of misdirected transfers, banks are now obliged to disclose all information necessary to request a refund upon written request.

This also results in a new customer benefit when booking hotels or rental vehicles: Up until now, hotels or car rental companies have often blocked certain amounts on the card without prior notice during the booking process.

From now on, this is also no longer approved without customer consent.
