The US states of Alabama and Mississippi are facing severe adverse effects from the weather.
As the US Weather Service reports, thunderstorms of the heaviest level are expected in large parts of the states.
In Louisiana and Arkansas, too, warnings of the highest warning level were issued.
As reported by the Washington Post, the first tornadoes have already been seen in Mississippi and Alabama.
In total, up to 40 million Americans could be at risk from storms, heavy rainfall and baseball-sized hailstones.
Accordingly, wind speeds of up to 130 km / h are expected.
The meteorologist Sprinks Megginson published a photo of a windpipe on Twitter that is said to have been taken in Autaga County, Alabama.
Local media have already reported the damage caused by the storm.
Recordings from local broadcaster WLBT3 showed severe devastation in Wayne County, Mississippi.
The national weather service confirmed that there was a tornado in the district.
According to the AP news agency, several large corona vaccination centers have been temporarily closed in the affected regions.
Schools in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi suspended classes or switched to online classes.
In Tennessee, a regional airport was opened to shelter for refugees.
