(ANSA) - BOLZANO, MARCH 18 - For the first time a study conducted by the Eurac of Bolzano, on the whole Alps, shows how since 1971 the snow cover is decreasing: in winter there is less snow, especially below 2000 meters , while in spring at all altitudes and in all regions.
The studies carried out so far have been limited to single ostate regions of the Alpine arc and were based on data from about twenty, or at most a few hundred, measuring stations.
Now, in a research coordinated by Eurac Research, the snow data of more than 2000 survey stations in Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Germany, Switzerland and France have been collected for the first time and evaluated in a unitary way.
The results published in the scientific journal The Cryosphere allowed us to reliably describe the snow trend up to 2000 meters above sea level.
This homogeneous set of data spans five decades and was created thanks to the collaboration of over 30 scientists from all Alpine states.
