(ANSA) - BARI, MARCH 18 - For the first time the organs of two alCovid positive patients were donated to the Policlinico di Bari, who unfortunately did not manage to defeat the disease.
Thanks to the generosity of the families of a man and a woman who died after contracting the Coronavirus, two lives were saved in Turin and Palermo.
The two positive patients, hospitalized in the two resuscitation wards of the Polyclinic, directed by Professor Nicola Brienza and Professor Salvatore Grasso, were able to donate the liver: one was transplanted in Turin, the other in Palermo.
Both interventions were successful.
The protocol provides that in case of positive Covid, only life-saving organs, such as heart and liver, can be donated and that patients in emergency Covid positive or patients on the waiting list for the transplant and who have recovered from Covid can receive the transplant. developing antibodies.
"A big thank you goes to the families of the two donors who, despite their pain, found the strength to make an ordinary gesture of solidarity: in one case the family members were all affected by Covid and still wanted to express their consent to the donation despite the disease that they too had suffered; in the other case it was the patient's wife with her teenage children who wanted a part of her husband to continue living ", explains Dr. Vincenzo Malcangi, Donations and Transplant Coordinator at the Bari Polyclinic.
