(ANSA) - PORT AU PRINCE, MAR 18 - The president of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, signed a decree imposing a state of emergency in many places in the country, after the new day of riots and violence recorded yesterday, which was also attended by groups of national police officers.
The news portal Haiti Libre is signed today.
The decree, published today in the Official Haitian Gazette (Le Moniteur Spécial n.18) was signed by Moise at the end of a meeting of the Council of Ministers and concerns the areas of Village de Dieu, Grand-Ravine, Delmas 2, Savien, la Petite Rivière de l 'Artibonite and all other' red 'areas identified by the Higher Council of the National Police.
Last week in Village de Dieu, a police department tried to free some people taken hostage by a local gang but was met by a shooting that caused the death of four officers and the serious injuries of eight others.
This has created malaise in the population but above all within the police, with the entry on the scene of a group called 'Fantôme 509' and composed of undivided agents, who abandoned themselves in protest to violence, also using the weapons of order.
The state of emergency has been decreed for a renewable period of one month and the rights of citizens can be limited within it to allow the police to regain control of the situation.
