A dentist with his own practice can look forward to generous earnings.

In the case of salaried dentists, the salary sometimes depends on your own commitment.

Although most patients

go

to the

dentist

with mixed feelings

, the job is a dream for many.

After all, dentists relieve their patients of severe pain, advise them on proper dental care and give them a radiant smile again with the help of crowns and bleaching.

The salary * of dentists is also impressive.

But how much do dentists earn, be it employed or with their own practice, exactly?

Starting salary as an assistant doctor

After studying dentistry, the young doctors initially earn two years as an

assistant doctor

, also known as a

preparatory

assistant

, in a dental practice.

There they assist the practice owner or look after their own patients.

Despite the responsibility, earnings are comparatively low in the first few years: According to a survey by the Deutsche Apotheker- und Ärztebank, they earn an average of

around 39,100 euros per year

.

The chances of being taken over should then be relatively good.

Alternatively, finished dentists move to a different practice or dental clinic as employees, or they set up their own practice.

Salary as an employed dentist

As a salaried dentist, the physician expects a lush salary after her assistant position:

71,200 euros gross

are in here annually.

The salary range for 50 percent of the dentists surveyed is between 50,000 and 82,000 euros gross.

There are two different remuneration

models

in dental practices:

fixed salary or variable remuneration.

What's the difference?

  • Fixed salary:

    The employed dentist receives a

     fixed salary

    each month

    .

This is independent of the hours worked and the cases dealt with.

If you want to earn more, you have to renegotiate your salary with the practice owner.

  • Variable remuneration:

    Also known as

    revenue sharing

    .

Here, the employed dentist receives a percentage share in the fee turnover generated by himself (excluding material costs), usually

    25 percent

    .

    In addition, a contractually agreed

    fixed salary is

    paid.

The fee turnover depends on the duration of each treatment step and the scope and complexity of the treatment.

The workload of the practice also plays a role.

The revenue share is often a

    threshold sales

    made.

Only when this is exceeded does the employed dentist receive his share of the fee sales he has earned himself.

According to the Deutsche Apotheker- und Ärztebank, the revenue sharing model with a fixed salary leads to a

higher salary

: Dentists earn

around 30 to 50 percent more

than doctors with a fixed salary.

Further lush salary increases are possible as a specialist dentist (e.g. orthodontics, oral surgery) or with additional qualifications such as periodontics or endodontics.

Salary as an independent dentist

As a dentist with his own practice, the best salary prospects await.

According to the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZBV), the average income of dentists in Germany is

around 161,000 euros per year

.
