VIDEO. AstraZeneca: "A safe and effective vaccine", reassures the European Medicines Agency

2021-03-18T18:04:58.213Z

The director of the European Medicines Agency affirms that the AstraZeneca vaccine against the coronavirus is "safe and effective" and "is not

This opinion was particularly awaited at a time when the European Union, in full shortage of vaccines, counts on millions of doses developed by the British firm AstraZeneca.

Since Monday, France had extended the list of about fifteen countries having suspended the administration of this vaccine following problems, such as difficulties in coagulating or the formation of clots.

Emmanuel Macron had made this decision on Monday, while waiting for the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to deliver its verdict on Thursday.

It's done.

“The committee came to a clear scientific conclusion: this is a safe and effective vaccine,” EMA Executive Director Emer Cooke said in a video conference.

"Its advantages in protecting people against Covid-19, with the associated risks of death and hospitalization, outweigh the possible risks."

The European regulator "also concluded that the vaccine was not associated with an increase in the overall risk of thromboembolic events or blood clots," said the director.

However, the EMA is not in a position to “definitively exclude” a link between the vaccine developed by the Swedish-British laboratory AstraZeneca and rare coagulation disorders.

The EMA's safety committee therefore recommended "to raise awareness of these potential risks and to ensure that they are included in the product information".

This major opinion from the European agency was issued an hour before Jean Castex and Olivier Véran speak jointly Thursday, at 7 p.m., to announce new health measures to fight against Covid-19, which will apply in particular to the Hauts -de-France and Ile-de-France.
