Last year, Lower Saxony recorded an increase in the area of violence in family or relationships.

That comes from the crime statistics, which are to be presented in the coming week.

While the number of recorded crimes fell by almost two percent in the corona year 2020, the investigative authorities recorded 21 509 cases of domestic violence, seven percent more than before the corona crisis.

SPD Interior Minister Boris Pistorius said that the number of these crimes has been increasing for years.

"In addition to the special Corona effect with lockdown, closed schools and home offices, the increase in investigative proceedings is also related to the fact that more and more women dare to report the crimes."

However, the number of unreported cases is "many times higher" and is now to be examined in a study.

Pistorius urges the laws to be tightened.

Misogynist motives should, according to Pistorius' ideas, "be explicitly mentioned as circumstances aggravating the punishment".

In almost all other phenomena areas, however, the number of registered crimes fell and fell below the 500,000 mark for the first time in the country's crime statistics.
