Turkey leaves the Istanbul Convention, a 2011 treaty to prevent and combat violence against women.
This was established by a presidential decree signed today and which has aroused criticism from the main opposition parties.
The Convention obliges governments to adopt legislation that tackles domestic violence and similar abuses, such as marital violence and female genital mutilation.
According to conservatives, the measure would undermine family unity, encouraging divorce and giving space to the LGBT community to be more accepted in society.
