It does not happen often that a regional council wants to change its name, but in the Lower Galilee they decided to stay with the "Galilee" and get rid of the "lower", which contains negative connotations, probably to the field of tourism.
The name change process began last week, about a year after the beginning of the tenure of the head of the regional council, Nitzan Peleg, with the publication of an open questionnaire for the council's residents and employees asking respondents to propose a new name to the council.

"This is a strategic process that we have been running for two years," Peleg said in a conversation with Walla!

The Lower Galilee Regional Council was established in 1950.
It currently has about 13,000 residents in 16 settlements and two youth villages (Kadouri and Indian) on an area of 193,000 dunams - from Kish village in the south to Masad in the north, from Beit Rimon in the west to Gush Arbel in the east.

Peleg: "It will be intriguing, it will differentiate, there will be a different exposure and the tourists are in favor of this matter."
Tirosh: "From a tourist point of view we have nature, and that should have an impact because we want them to support us, we want to develop local pride that will flourish the local attractions and within the communities."
In May, the voting will take place in the localities in a special two- to three-day event.
It is important to note that the Lower Galilee region will remain with its name of course, but the name of the council will change, which will later also require a change in many maps.
