The Lower Galilee Regional Council will change its name, because the connotation of "lower" does them no good, certainly not when it is linked to crime incidents in the area, which are not related to it. Today, 4 names were confirmed who reached the final to be held in May, so will it soon be called "Eretz Hagalil" or perhaps "Sha'ar HaGalil"?

It does not happen often that a regional council wants to change its name, but in the Lower Galilee they decided to stay with the "Galilee" and get rid of the "lower", which contains negative connotations, probably to the field of tourism.

The name change process began last week, about a year after the beginning of the tenure of the head of the regional council, Nitzan Peleg, with the publication of an open questionnaire for the council's residents and employees asking respondents to propose a new name to the council.

The questionnaire was constructed in an open configuration for proposals freely with two reservations of professional factors: staying with the word

and separating from the word

.

"This is a strategic process that we have been running for two years," Peleg said in a conversation with Walla!

Tourism, "and I said we need to rebrand and increase the affiliation of the residents to the council. After in-depth processes, we wrote a vision for the council, opened an economic company, schools and the name is a suit, not the point. The idea is that the Lower Galilee is a very large geographical area. "We immediately get a mention of the Lower Galilee, even though it does not belong to the council."

The Lower Galilee has often been included in crime, shooting and other criminal offenses related to villages in the Arab sector, which are in the Lower Galilee region as local councils of their own, and the automatic connection of the area with the council name gives it a negative reputation, and want to change that.

The Lower Galilee Regional Council was established in 1950.

It currently has about 13,000 residents in 16 settlements and two youth villages (Kadouri and Indian) on an area of 193,000 dunams - from Kish village in the south to Masad in the north, from Beit Rimon in the west to Gush Arbel in the east.

Kindergarten children suggested the name "Lev Hagalil"

"They came to the conclusion that the 'Galilee' should stay and the 'bottom' should come out, and last week we went out to a questionnaire of council employees and residents who are invited to bid there," said council spokesman Ron Tirosh.

More than 250 residents and employees responded to the questionnaire, and dozens of other proposals came to the council's management desk through informal means such as email, WhatsApp, Facebook and even facsimile forms.

Among the names that reached the finals are the

Green Galilee, the Galilee Valley, the Pearl of Galilee, Galilee, Mishor Hagalil, Sha'ar Hagalil, Mevo Galil, Galil Tavor, Eretz Hagalil, Peni Galil, Central Galilee.

Among the answers you can also find reasoned requests from sixth graders from the Yad Sasson State Religious School and a proposal from kindergarten children. The field flowers "from Moshav Hazorim, who voted by a majority vote for the name" Lev Hagalil "and the name for the heart and love" which are the most important in the body ", as defined by the kindergarten teacher (but did not pass the plenum vote).

Finally, four names came to the vote. ), And they are:

"Tourists in favor of this matter"

Will the symbol of the council also change?

Peleg: "It will later change its name. When the new name is elected, it will enter the Interior Ministry's naming committee and be approved there. The public seems to be with us and wants it, and the council plenum has approved the four final names."

How do you think this will have a tourist impact on the council and its residents?

Peleg: "It will be intriguing, it will differentiate, there will be a different exposure and the tourists are in favor of this matter."

Tirosh: "From a tourist point of view we have nature, and that should have an impact because we want them to support us, we want to develop local pride that will flourish the local attractions and within the communities."

In May, the voting will take place in the localities in a special two- to three-day event.

It is important to note that the Lower Galilee region will remain with its name of course, but the name of the council will change, which will later also require a change in many maps.
