(ANSA) - SAN PAOLO, MAR 22 - The cemetery of Vila Formosa, in San Paolo, considered the largest in South America, yesterday registered four-hour queues for burials, despite the Municipality hiring more operators to cope with the increase in deaths caused by the coronavirus.
According to the radio CBN, of the Globo group, relatives found themselves in long queues losing the last farewell to their loved ones.
The increase in deaths recorded during the pandemic has affected a large number of people who are looking for a place in the cemetery of 670,000 square meters, located in the eastern area of Sao Paulo, the poorest of the megalopolis of 12 million inhabitants.
"The most critical scenes are seen at the wake, where the agent crowds the most," said Joao Batista Gomes, of the Sao Paulo Public Employees Union.
A photograph of Vila Formosa in April 2020 was on the cover of the Washington Post, noting that at the time the number of cultures had doubled.
On Tuesday, among other things, 100 new graves were excavated in the cemetery, reported the Metropolis portal.
The state of Sao Paulo, the most populous in Brazil, is also the most affected by Covid-19, with about 68,000 deaths.
