Is there a market for drugstores beyond dm, Rossmann and Müller? A supermarket empire believes in it and is working to expand.

Is there a market for drugstores beyond dm, Rossmann and Müller?

A supermarket empire believes in it and is working to expand.

Munich - The competition between the big drugstores in Germany is tough.

Rossmann, dm and Müller are everywhere.

The market is largely divided between the well-known chains - and the branches can be found literally on every corner.

So the prerequisites for a new competitor are extremely poor.

For a few years now, the small, regional Budni chain has been expanding.

It goes without saying that the drugstore dwarf is at a disadvantage compared to the Germany-wide operating companies Rossmann or dm.

But a look at the range now reveals that Budni has set the

course for further expansion

.

Cooperation with Edeka: Budni expands from Hamburg

Budni comes from Hamburg and is still less known outside of the Hanseatic city.

The drugstores only operated in the narrowly limited regional market.

For over 100 years there were no branches outside of Hamburg at all.

In 2018, Budni moved to the capital Berlin with a first branch opening.

At that time, a larger partner for purchasing and logistics was needed for a larger expansion.

Budni had actually found it, because one of the most important supermarket empires in Germany was interested in the drugstore business.

Budni cooperates with Edeka and was able to expand with this support.

In 2019, for example, the first Bavarian Budni branch opened in Bamberg.

Discounter Budni shares the range with Netto

How does Budni now manage to assert himself on an ever larger scale against Rossmann, dm and Müller?

The

Lebensmittel Zeitung has

documented

a reference to this

.

In the drugstore's range, it is currently noticeable that more

and more own brands from a well-known market are on the shelves

.

This is the discounter Netto, which also belongs to Edeka.

Those who buy from Netto more often are probably familiar with own brands such as “Priva” or “Favora”.

From body care and kitchen rolls to animal feed, the

Budni and Netto range has already been heavily aligned

Budni and Netto: An Edeka alliance takes on Rossmann, dm and Müller

The two companies from the Edeka family, which will soon also include former Real branches, are now making full use of the cooperation in purchasing.

An important prerequisite for the expansion of the Hamburg company is thus secured.

Now it remains to be seen how customers react to the fact that the shelves look like those at Netto.

Perhaps some customers prefer to buy the well-known own brands where they have always done it anyway.

The competition could not only consist of Müller, Rossmann and dm, but also of your own cooperation partner.
