- Frozen apple orchards to protect the delicate shoots from night frosts.
It is the traditional irrigation practice implemented urgently by farmers in the fields surrounding some vineyards of the J. Hofstätter estate in Tramin-Termeno, in the province of Bolzano.
A real frozen paradise built in one night, that of Saturday 20 March, to save the first signs of spring in the orchards in the Adige Valley.
"These vagaries of the climate have always put farmers in an entire valley in difficulty", says Martin Foradori Hofstätter, at the head of the homonymous estate, in specifying that "such low night temperatures in early spring are not normal but not atypical for this period ". This year, however, the spring night frosts have announced earlier than usual but fortunately the vegetation of the vineyards is delayed. According to Hofstätter, therefore, at the moment "there are no risks for the vineyards, even if, without a doubt, it is a year that teaches us again that those who work with nature must always be on alert and prepared to react promptly".
