It happens from afar, but the Amazon Prime Video service will invest heavily in audiovisual production on French soil.
The platform with 150 million subscribers around the world announces that it will produce ten original French programs this year, compared to none in 2019 and only two in 2020. The ten will serve as a threshold in the future, combined films and documentaries.
A new ambition that is placed behind that of its competitor No. 1 Netflix which, in 2020, had announced 20 original programs in France.

Behind this marked interest of streaming services for France hides a legal constraint soon to be put in place.
Netflix, Disney, Amazon or even Apple TV will be obliged by the decree "audiovisual media service directive" (SMAD) to allocate 20 to 25% of their French turnover to local production.
The file is still hotly debated, but should enter into force from the second quarter of 2021.
