Special corona rules apply over the Easter holidays - how the resolutions of the summit affect shopping.

Frankfurt / Berlin - The result of the Corona summit * on Monday (March 22nd, 2021) is, among other things, the toughest lockdown since the beginning of the pandemic. * Part of this are stricter contact restrictions at Easter and new regulations for supermarkets.

When the shops are open and what to watch out for - an overview.

Corona at Easter: supermarkets in lockdown - what applies

According to Chancellor Angela Merkel *, the Easter holidays should be an “extended rest period”.

It is valid from April 1st, Maundy Thursday, to April 5th, Easter Monday.

Maundy Thursday will be treated like a public holiday this year, i.e. the supermarkets will remain closed.

The same applies on Good Friday, which is a public holiday anyway.

On the other hand, food retailers are allowed to open on Easter Saturday (April 3rd, 2021).

It is still unclear whether the regular opening times on Saturday will apply - but it can be assumed.

Excluded from the regulations are the entire Easter holidays via petrol stations and kiosks that have special permits that allow them to open on weekends during regular operation.

In the draft resolution, which was made public in the run-up to the Corona summit, it was said: "The principle #WirBleibenZuHause applies for five consecutive days." and on Saturday (April 3rd, 2021).

Corona summit: retailers criticize supermarket closings on Maundy Thursday

Joachim Stamp (CDU), Deputy Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, told the "WDR" that the opening of the food retail trade on Easter Saturday was intended to prevent a rush to the shops in the run-up to the Easter holidays.

The “Handelsverband Deutschland” rates the closings of supermarkets on Maundy Thursday as “counterproductive”.

"To symbolically close the food trade with its demonstrably well-functioning hygiene concepts for a day does not help in the fight against the pandemic," emphasized Stefan Genth, General Manager of the "HDE".
