According to police, at least ten people were killed in the firearms attack in a supermarket in the US state of Colorado on Monday.

A police officer was among the victims, said the chief of police in Boulder, Maris Herold.

The officer was the first to arrive at the scene after shots were reported from the supermarket.

Herold praised the "heroic" efforts of the shot policeman.

The alleged attacker was arrested, according to the prosecutor.

The perpetrator opened fire in the afternoon in a supermarket in the city of Boulder, about 50 kilometers northwest of Denver.

The police came with a large contingent.

Live images from the crime scene showed the officers handcuffing a man who was bleeding from his leg.

The police initially did not provide any information as to whether he was the arrested suspect.

US President Joe Biden had been informed of the crime, wrote his spokeswoman Jen Psaki on the online service Twitter.

Colorado's governor Jared Polis spoke of a "senseless tragedy".

Boulder's Mayor Sam Weaver was also shocked by the act of violence.

Only last week there had been fatal attacks on three massage parlors in the state of Georgia.

Eight people were shot, including six women of Asian origin.

Two of the worst gun attacks in recent US history had occurred in Colorado in the past few decades.

At Columbine High School in Littleton, two teenagers shot and killed twelve classmates and a teacher in April 1999.

They then committed suicide.

In June 2012, a 24-year-old man opened fire in a movie theater in Aurora town, killing twelve people.

The gunman was later sentenced to life imprisonment.
