(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 24 - The Cuban government is planning to immunize almost the entire population of the capital Havana by May with the two locally developed vaccine candidates, Soberana 2 and Abdala.

The campaign, explains the website of the magazine Granma, should target 1.7 million people, to be immunized by May.

The Cuban capital currently has 292 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, compared to 103 in the rest of the country, and the vaccination program will be part of phase 3 of the trial of the two candidates, for which authorization should be requested in June.

"With the approval for emergency use - said the director of the Cuban Ministry of Health IleanaMorales - we will be on track for a massive vaccination of the population".

Immunizations in the country will start from over-60s and health workers.

6 million people should be vaccinated by August, while the goal is to immunize the country's 11 million inhabitants by the end of the year.

Cuban vaccines have also sparked interest from other countries, from Iran to Venezuela to Jamaica.
