A Bavarian goldsmith with a big heart made a copy of her stolen wedding ring and gave it to a blind senior citizen from North Rhine-Westphalia.
After a stranger from the almost 79-year-old from Essen stole the ring at the beginning of March, the goldsmith from near Munich contacted the Essen police.
He had read about the case in the newspaper.
The man offered to make a new ring for the woman free of charge.
The Essen police reportedly provided information about the shape, size and engraving of the ring.
Then the 66-year-old goldsmith made the ring and sent it to the police.
On Thursday officials brought her and her husband the small package along with a friendly card from Bavaria.
The pensioner was overwhelmed, said a police spokesman.
The couple has been married for almost 58 years.
There was still no trace of the thief, said the spokesman.
The stranger rang the senior citizen's doorbell on March 5th and pretended to be an employee of the municipal utility who wanted to check the lines.
He had instructed the woman to take off all metal objects "for security reasons", packed the ring and cash, and disappeared.
The police are still looking for witnesses from the neighborhood.
