(ANSA) - PARIS, MARCH 26 - France, which has massively intervened in Rwanda since the 1990s, aligning the positions of the country's Hutu regime, carries "heavy and crushing responsibilities" in the drift that led to the genocide of the Tutsi in 1994: this is what we read in the conclusion of an awaited report by a commission of historians revealed today by France Presse.
The conclusions of the report, delivered to President Emmanuel Macron, criticize the "failure of France in Rwanda", underlining however that "nothing proves" that it was "complicit" in the genocide which, according to the UN, caused 800,000 deaths.
The report - Macron commented after receiving one of its authors at the Elysée.
- "marks a considerable step in the understanding and judgment of the commitment" of France in the African country.
The head of state "encourages" the "continuation of the knowledge and memory work on the Tutsi genocide", with the opening "in the coming days" of the "main archive funds" on this dossier.
"France - assured the presidency - will continue its efforts to combat the impunity of people responsible for crimes of enocide".
