According to a statement from the Egyptian railways authority, the trains collided after unidentified individuals "applied the emergency brake in several wagons".

The collision, which resulted in the overturning of at least two wagons, took place "between the stations of Maragha and Tahta".

The prosecution announced in a statement that it had opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the accident.
